Happy Birthday to Jonne Tammela!

It’s been a busy week or two for birthdays among Lightning players. And today, Jonne Tammela turns 19!

Tammela was a 4th round pick by the Lightning in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, 118th overall. The Finland native is known to be a pest and an agitator. He’s still growing, but is listed at 5’11” and 185 pounds. A little more size could help him to withstand the rigors of the NHL while annoying the hell out of opponents.

Prior to being drafted, Tammela split the year between KalPa’s U20 team and KalPa’s mens Liiga team. He had 27 points in 26 games for the U20 team and 4 goals in 32 Liiga games. He was also pointless in 4 Liiga playoff games. For 2015-16, he spent the entire year with KalPa in Liiga, other than 8 games for the U20 team during the playoffs. He had 13 points in 37 games, pointless in 3 playoff games, and had 5 points in his 8 U20 playoff games.

After Finnishing his season in Finland, Tammela joined Syracuse for 3 games where he had 1 assist and followed it up by signing a three year entry level contract. While there was speculation initially that Tammela would play in Syracuse, the Lightning have since signed a number of minor league free agent forwards that make it more likely he’ll play junior hockey.

Tammela’s rights are owned by the Peterborough Petes of the OHL. Peterborough already has some import players on their roster and with their ability to only dress two imports per game, it’s possible Peterborough could trade Tammela’s rights. Tammela will be at training camp with the Lightning and we may not find out his final destination until he is cut from camp.

Wherever he ends up for the 2016-17 season, we’ll be sure to cheer on our pesty Finn!
